Dog Grooming

At Absolutely Precious Paws Dog Boarding Hotel we want you dog to look and feel it's best.

Grooming, why is it important? Many of us think that a pet grooms its self sufficiently, especially our shorter haired breeds. But these days many of our friends struggle to keep on top of their coats needs. There are many different factors which affect their skin and hair including

  • pests and lice
  • toxins in the environment
  • unnatural fibres / contaminants
  • a lot of dogs have a coat which is a too greater challenge e.g. long and curly non shedding.

In the wild, dogs are able to remove themselves from these situations and unlike our pets, they are not put into contact with the different contaminants and toxins in the regular household. It is us who put our dogs into un natural environments, so it is up to us to ensure their number one defence layer is protected. “A beautiful dog is a healthy dog”,that statement is so true. The skin layer of a dog is its first level of defence, if this is compromised the dogs health can be affected. Brushing and bathing can do wonders to a dogs mental and physical health. How is this you may ask? Brushing and stimulating the coat promotes blood flow, this helps muscle development and kidney / organ function. The extra blood flow passing through the organs allows them to complete their job more efficiently, the dog then has “clean“ blood flowing around its body, able to complete it's job properly. Brushing/grooming is also a great way to bond with your dog, a good friendship is the key to having a happy dog.
Bathing helps to remove dirt, debris and pests such as fleas. You may also find you spend more time close with your dog when it smells nice and clean!

If the breed of dog is one which requires regular grooming, it is necessary to take it to the groomer to be styled and clipped. This is so the coat is more easily managed by the dog / owner team. In winter clipping can be left a bit longer so your little friend can have a thicker jersey on but a general rule is between 6-8 weeks.

It is very important in-between clips that the dog is groomed thoroughly. If the dog becomes matted, it can take a lot of time de-matting which isn’t pleasant for the dog or the groomer.

The Aim of grooming:

  • Develop a strong bond with your dog
  • Allow your dog to feel good about himself
  • Brushing stimulates blood flow, which in turn helps organ function
  • Have a happy comfortable dog not too hot, not too cold, nor restricted by knots
  • Daily checks of ears, eyes, skin and teeth, look for deposits of oil and/or smell

Remember a ‘beautiful dog is a happy dog”
